The Slow Build of a Wise Man

We live in a world that sells a shortcut for everything — the faster route, the overnight win - but is that the way you should live your life?

If you've ever looked at someone climbing fast and quietly wondered whether you're the one doing it wrong, Proverbs 13 has a word for you that you need to hear today.

In today's episode, Christian, our devo leader this week, unpacks what he calls the slow build of a wise man, and the challenge lands on who you are surrounding yourself with.

Gentlemen, every day is a battle. A battle for your faith, your family, and your purpose. The men who stand strong don't prepare when the battle arrives. They prepare before it begins. Welcome to the Men's Morning Devotional. Let's get into God's word. It's time to man up.

Good morning and welcome back to the Men's Morning Devotional. My name is Christian, and it's an honor and a privilege to go through the book of Proverbs with you men this week. It really has been a blessing, and we're just in the middle of it. So we'll continue to go through. And today we're going to be diving into Proverbs chapter 13. And this one, if you're if there's a title for this, would be The Slow Build of a Wise Man. Let's read the scriptures together. Proverbs 13, 20 says, One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. You see, I think it's something that's really important that we look at that chapter 13 has no shortcuts in it anywhere. And as men that live in a world that is always advertising a shortcut of some way, the Bible shows us, specifically in this chapter, that there are no shortcuts. And that a wise man isn't made by one decision, but instead he's made by the slow accumulation of the right company, the right pace, and the right correction. That to be a wise man, to to build a wealth of wisdom, it is not something that happens overnight. It happens by the type of people we're surrounded by. It's that age-old saying, Show me your five friends and I'll show you who you are. Who are we placing around ourselves? Are we placing other godly men? Are we placing men of virtue, men of wisdom? A point of truth that I look to in my own life when I see all of the people that might be a similar age or might be doing things dishonestly that are seemingly going up and up and up in the world. And all of a sudden they have the nice car, they have the nice house, they have all of these great things. But they didn't do it correctly. You see, the temptation is from the enemy to believe that I am doing it wrong because it's not happening now. No, that is not how the kingdom of God works. You see, the kingdom of God is like a seed that is planted into our hearts, that is growing into a harvest. And I don't know about you, but I want a harvest that lasts. I don't want a harvest that's shrinking back. I don't want a harvest that is all of a sudden gonna slip out of my hands like grains of sand. So our man up challenge is this Who are we walking with? Not who we like, but who are we truly becoming like? Let's pray. Lord Jesus, we pray that this seed that was sown in our hearts might sprout a harvest today. That Lord, the wisdom that is displayed in your Proverbs would be displayed in our lives. We love you, we praise you, and we thank you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
